How We Make Our Wax Melts
Here at Coco Candle Co we go through approximately 50-100KG of the highest quality Soy Wax to make our highly scented soy wax melts. We have created this blog post to show how we make our wax melts.
Step 1: Melting the wax
We load the raw un-fragranced soy wax pellets into our industrial wax melter until completely melted and we have reached the desired temp of approx. 55-60°C. We have found this to be the optimum temperature for pouring and minimising fragrance burn off (the hotter the wax the more fragrance is burned off in the making process leading to a weaker scent throw)
Step 2: Weighing The Wax
Once we have our wax melted to the correct temperature, we then need to weigh the right amount for the batch we are making. We typically pour 25 packs in each batch, wax is heavy so this saves our arms! We decant from the melter into a mixing jug on a tared off scale. The un-fragranced wax is then poured to the correct weight for the batch we are making.
Step 3: Adding Fragrance Oil
When we have the correct amount of molten wax for the batch we are making we then add fragrance! Each wax melt fragrance we sell has been tested to get the best balance between hot and cold scent throw. We tare the scale to zero and then start to carefully pour in the concentrated fragrance oil until we have added the correct amount. Our melts are typically loaded with between 7-10% fragrance. Some oils are extremely strong so at 10% it can be too strong and unpleasant, also the wax cannot hold much more than a 10% fragrance load. Each wax melt fragrance we sell has been tested to achieve the best scent throw.
Step 4: Pouring The Wax
Our favourite part! Before we pour into the clamshells, they need to be labelled with both the front clear label and the legal CLP label on the bottom of the pack. We line them up and start pouring into the clamshells. Each pack is poured by hand by us to approximately 90g.
Step 5: Cooling & Sorting
Once the wax melts have cooled and solidified, they need to be quality checked for and splashed wax or if they are underfilled. Once that’s done, they can go on the racks ready for our customers to order!
