How Wax Melts Work

In the world of home fragrance, wax melts have surged in popularity, offering an array of scents that fill our living spaces with delightful aromas, here at Coco Candle we have over 60 wax melt fragrances to choose from. But have you ever stopped to ponder the magic behind these small, fragrant wonders? In this article, we'll delve into the fascinating mechanics of wax melts, uncovering the science behind their captivating aroma release.

The Basics of Wax Melts:

Wax melts are small, scented pieces of wax designed to be melted slowly, releasing their fragrance into the surrounding air. They are typically used with a wax warmer or burner, which gently heats the wax, causing it to melt and emit its scent.

Ingredients: The primary ingredients in wax melts are wax and fragrance oil. The type of wax used can vary, with popular options including paraffin wax, soy wax, and beeswax. At Coco Candle Co we use UK made Soy wax in our wax melts. Each type of wax has its own unique properties, which can affect factors such as scent throw and burn time. Fragrance oils are added to the wax to impart the desired scent.

How They Work:

When a wax melt is placed in a wax warmer and heated, several key processes occur to release its fragrance:

  1. Melting: The heat from the wax warmer causes the solid wax melt to melt into a liquid state. This process typically occurs at a relatively low temperature, allowing the wax to melt slowly without burning.

  2. Evaporation: As the wax melts, the fragrance oil mixed within it begins to evaporate. The heat from the warmer increases the rate of evaporation, causing the fragrance molecules to become airborne and filling your home with the beautiful scent.

  3. Diffusion: Once released into the air, the fragrance molecules spread out and disperse throughout the room.

  4. Once the tealight or electric melter is extinguished or turned off the wax cools and hardens, ready to be used again and again until all the fragrance has gone. At this point the wax can simply be popped out and replace with another beautiful scent. Read our other blog post on how to change wax melts in your wax warmer
